Title: Failed Attempt
Pairing: Marui/Kirihara
Genre: Gen
Author's Notes: For my dear [info]spheksophobia. It's probably a lot more gen than you wanted, but it seems to be all I can write.

"That's not going to work" was all that Marui said when he found Kirihara stuffing a bag full of water balloons to the gym ceiling, but that was enough to make Kirihara lose balance on the ladder he was precariously perched on. As Marui watched, calmly popping a bubble, Kirihara fell on the floor in a pile of awkwardly long adolescent limbs.

"You okay?" Marui knelt next to the pile of Kirihara and grabbed a hand that was poking out. "Yukimura would kill me if you hurt yourself."

"No I'm not okay!" Kirihara yelped. "What did you think, I'd fall off of a ten foot--"

"Looks more like twelve," Marui commented.

"Twelve foot ladder and be okay?"

"Yup, you're fine." Marui stood back up. "Want me to get your balloons down for you?"

"No!" Kirihara exclaimed. He had spent the better part of two weeks planning this and a total of more than three hours just wrestling the stupid net into place, and now his idiot (but hot) sempai wanted to take it down?

"Niou already did it," Marui explained calmly. "They always check up there before assemblies now."

Kirihara looked at him incredulously. "You mean they always climb up there to make sure there are no balloons? That sounds kind of stupid, sempai..."

"No, idiot." Marui wondered if Kirihara was really that dumb or if the fall had actually hurt something important. "They just look up."

"Oh." Kirihara sat up slowly, rubbing his legs where he had landed on them. "But how would they get them down?"

"No one's been stupid enough to try again," Marui said dryly. "You'd better get them down."

"Or what?" Kirihara challenged him.

"They'd be pissed."

"How would they know it was me?"

That was actually a good question, Marui thought. Though, given the list of possible suspects, the administration wouldn't have to go through many students before they got to the temperamental and entirely disrespectful upstart in the tennis club. Of course, that was assuming they had enough brains to think about it, which Marui honestly doubted sometimes.

"They'd probably blame Niou-sempai," Kirihara continued, "so it doesn't really matter if I take it down or not."

"Well, Niou would be pissed."

"So?"

All right, Kirihara had always been an idiot but he had never been that dumb before. Marui grabbed his arm and pulled him to the nurse's office. Kirihara protested every step of the way. He had to put the remote control car on the beam, so that when he pressed the button the balloons would all fall. At first, Marui didn't even bother comment about how that probably wouldn't work. It was obvious to a genius like him, but he didn't like explaining things to other people. Yukimura was better at that, and if he wasn't around, then Yagyuu. Yanagi talked over everyone's heads (well, Marui understood him, he just didn't feel like keeping up all of the time--Yanagi talked well over 300 words per minute on average, according to his Seigaku friend), so he was no good. Jackal was just as bad as Marui, but he hid it better. It wasn't even worth the trouble to ask Sanada or Niou.

Unfortunately, Yukimura wasn't around and if he was, he probably would have made Marui explain to Kirihara anyways. Yagyuu would have slipped away as soon as he saw the bruises on Kirihara's... well, on Kirihara. Stupid overachiever was afraid of blood, Marui thought darkly to himself. In fact, no one was around to help explain to Kirihara why you couldn't put a toy on a tiny little beam and expect it to go straight, so Marui stopped pulling at his arm for a second and turned around. Kirihara looked up at him hopefully.

"Can I go back--"

Marui took a deep breath and explained, slowly, that toy cars are made to amuse five year old boys who had the attention span that Yukimura-buchou had when it came to just about anything where he wasn't tossing little green balls around. Therefore, the toys weren't made to do very much at all or do it very well, so it wouldn't go in straight line and if it could go in a straight line, it wouldn't be strong enough to knock a very large bag of balloons over.

Kirihara thought about that, staring into Marui's eyes--Marui thought it was a strange place to stare while thinking--then said, "That's not true. Buchou always pays attention in class too."

Marui opened his mouth to ask how the hell Kirihara would know that, but decided that he didn't want to know. Instead, he just tightened his grip on Kirihara's arm and kept pulling and carefully didn't think about how much Kirihara might know about him and how he wouldn't mind if Kirihara knew, well, a lot.

They reached the nurse's office in no time at all, despite Kirihara's incessant protests. He didn't actually resist Marui, not physically at least. The nurse, thankfully, was there and she took one look at Kirihara before immediately checking for broken bones. Marui watched curiously as she squeezed at Kirihara's limbs, eliciting whimpers from pain and long strings of swear words that Marui didn't know Kirihara knew.

Finally, she seemed satisfied that nothing was broken and told Kirihara that he was free to go to the assembly if he wanted. Marui thought of the balloons that had probably been found already and decided for the both of them.

"I think it would be better if he rested," he said innocently. "I'll watch over him to make sure he's okay."

The nurse beamed at him, telling him that he was such a good friend and that Kirihara was lucky to have him. Marui imagined how mad the principal would be and he agreed with her. Kirihara was definitely lucky to have him.

Unfortunately, he was also right about who they would blame. Niou stormed into the nurse's office an hour later. Marui considered leaving Kirihara to his fate, then went to talk some sense into Niou.

Yeah, the little brat was damn lucky to have him.
